Launching a podcast is easy. Launching a successful one is much harder. Research shows that many podcasts never make it past their first few episodes and that most attract fewer than 100 downloads per release. For a regional show, success is not about competing with the numbers of national productions but about building momentum, finding the right audience and keeping them engaged.
That is exactly what Yellow Duck Marketing and ULI Charlotte has achieved with Building Connections. In just six months, the podcast reached 1,000 downloads across its first five episodes. For a regionally focused series, that number represents a strong and steady start. It shows that listeners are not only tuning in but also returning to hear more.
This kind of success does not happen by accident. It starts with the right strategy and the right partner. Together with ULI Charlotte, we built a comprehensive roadmap that covered everything from naming and branding to episode structure, timelines and marketing. Just as important, we worked to identify the right hosts and guests and shaped each episode around content that would resonate with members and community stakeholders. Every conversation is backed by detailed preparation including scripts, prompts and segment planning that help hosts and guests deliver their best insights.
The result is a podcast that feels both relevant and engaging. Episodes have covered recovery stories following Hurricane Helene with Debra Campbell, the Mayor of Asheville, regional development trends and insights from the local Federal Reserve. The series has also explored one of the region’s most pressing and timely issues: the future of transportation in the Charlotte region. In that conversation, host Tracy Dodson sat down with Ned Curran and David Howard to examine Charlotte’s transportation planning history, the challenges of North Carolina’s state-controlled road network and the urgent need for new funding tools. With tens of thousands of cars projected to be added to local roads each year, the discussion was able to highlight why thoughtful planning and sustainable mobility are essential to the region’s growth and explain the referendum in terms everyone could understand.
Building Connections demonstrates what is possible when an organization commits to creating meaningful content and invests in doing it the right way. While many new podcasts struggle to gain traction, this one has already found its audience. Its early success reinforces the importance of having a clear strategy, quality production support and strong promotional efforts behind every episode.
As ULI Charlotte continues to grow the series, Building Connections is proving to be more than a podcast. It is a platform for thought leadership, a tool for association member engagement and a way to keep important conversations going from existing content programs.
