At the heart of every successful print project is a blend of creativity, organization and strong collaboration. We sat down with Rhonda, our print production expert, to learn more about her process, what makes a project shine, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. From her favorite stages of production to tips for newcomers, Rhonda shares her insights on managing print projects with precision — and a little bit of calm under pressure. Plus, we get a glimpse into what she loves about Charlotte and her passion for fostering a love of reading, both inside and outside of work.

Q: What’s your favorite stage of the printing process and why?

My favorite part of the printing process is the research and communication in the beginning of a project. I enjoy talking to the designer and account manager to better understand what we are trying to accomplish so that I can communicate with the vendor and brainstorm the best solution for the client’s needs.

Q: What do you think makes a print project successful from start to finish?

A: When we have clear expectations at the beginning of a project from the client and the team, it helps pave the way for a great finished product. It allows me to choose the best print partner to help us deliver a great quality project on time.

Q: How has your experience in publication design shaped the way you handle production today?

A: Publication design is incredibly fast-paced and a deadline-oriented design environment. It taught me to be detail oriented and efficient because the work needed to be done creatively and accurately no matter how little time was given. Having been out of that environment for a while now, I can take those skills to a more relaxed environment and keep my cool a little easier while still making sure projects go out accurately.

Q: What’s a piece of advice you’d give someone new to managing print projects?

A: As a young designer, you are taught how to design beautiful projects, but you aren’t taught how to understand the limitations and capabilities of having things professionally produced. Communication, organization and attention to detail is key. It’s important to meet with vendors to understand their equipment and its limitations and build a relationship so they understand you are partners in each project. Vendors are a wonderful resource in helping you to understand important aspects of a job like paper costs and specialty finishes.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about living in Charlotte?

A: I grew up in Illinois where it was challenging to experience nature all year round. I love that we get to see sunshine most weeks. Even though Charlotte is a major metropolitan area, we are so lucky to have access to nature in pockets throughout the city. The access to resources like live theater and a thriving arts scene also makes me happy to live here.

Q: Outside of work, what are you passionate about?

A: I love reading and love to talk to other people about reading, especially kids. Today there are so many books out there for every kid to feel seen and understood. The more kids read about other kinds of people, the more they understand their world. And that goes for adults as well!
