QR Codes Done Right: Boost Engagement with These Tips

qr codes digital marketing

QR codes aren’t new, but in recent years they’ve had a serious glow-up. From restaurant menus to event flyers to billboard ads, these tiny pixel patterns have become a quick bridge between the physical and digital worlds.

A well-placed, well-designed QR code can streamline your customer’s journey and spark action. A poorly executed one can do the opposite. At Yellow Duck Marketing, we create QR codes that connect your audience and keep them engaged.

DO: Deliver Real Value

When someone scans your QR code, reward their curiosity. Think beyond generic links and guide them to something memorable like special incentives, floorplan downloads, event details or engaging community maps.

Pro Tip: Track the scans and let the data guide you. Analytics tell you which QR codes are performing best so you can refine your strategy and focus on what your audience loves.

DON’T: Make it Hard to Find

A QR code that’s too small or hidden might as well not be on the sign. Placement matters. Keep it in a prominent spot, with plenty of white space (not on top of a busy pattern), and make sure it’s easy to scan from where your audience is standing. Do not assume someone can scan an apartment leasing yard sign while driving down a highway, so it has to be in a good standing spot for pedestrians or stopping spot for drivers.

Pro Tip: For outdoor signs, stand where your audience will be and make sure it works from that spot. This means not too high up (e.g. fourth floor of a building will not work) and not too small.

DON’T: Forget a Clear CTA

Not everyone automatically knows what your QR code does. Make it clear and inviting with a simple call-to-action, like:

  • “Scan to RSVP”
  • “Scan for 15% Off”
  • “Scan to Watch the Video”
  • “Scan for more info on this home”

Pro Tip: A clear message builds trust and encourages more scans because people know exactly what to expect.

DO: Test Before You Publish

Before sharing your QR code, step into your audience’s shoes. Grab your phone, scan it, and confirm it works smoothly and leads to the right spot. Test it on iOS, Android and various browsers.

Pro Tip: Keep your URL short to make the code more readable and improve scan speed.

DO: Include the Full URL as a Backup

Always provide the web address alongside your QR code so users can easily access the content if they have trouble scanning. This ensures no one misses out, no matter their device or app. We can’t tell you how many QR codes we’ve seen go out in an email or social post that could just as easily be a link.

Pro-Tip: Create vanity URLs with a URL shortener to keep links neat and user-friendly.

DON’T: Deliver a Poor Mobile Experience

With most QR code users on smartphones, it’s crucial your landing page loads swiftly, is mobile-friendly and offers a smooth experience on small screens.

The key to successful QR codes is making them useful, visible and easy to use. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll turn a simple scan into meaningful engagement. Yellow Duck Marketing has the expertise to guide you every step of the way, so your QR codes always deliver a standout experience.
