As conversations around Charlotte’s urban tree canopy continue to grow, it’s important to remember that building a greener city isn’t driven solely by large-scale initiatives. It also happens through everyday actions that invite residents to care for the places they call home. That idea sits at the center of a recent project with the City of Charlotte Landscape Management: custom native seed packets designed for community outreach and tabling events.
The goal was simple: To turn a traditional giveaway into something people would actually use and keep using.
From Giveaway to Living Resource
We designed seed packets that extend beyond a typical promotional item. Instead, they function as a small but meaningful environmental tool.
Each packet includes:
- A curated mix of North Carolina native wildflowers
- Planting instructions that are simple and accessible
- A link to the City’s pollinator resources
- English and Spanish versions for broader accessibility
The intention was to create something that keeps the conversation going long after an event ends.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the opportunity to build on work we’d already completed for the client. Rather than creating an entirely new look, our team extended the visual identity we had previously developed for Landscape Management’s pollinator garden signage and other outreach materials. Carrying those design elements into the seed packets created a cohesive experience across multiple educational pieces while reinforcing the connection between native plants, pollinators and environmental stewardship. It’s a great example of how thoughtful design can strengthen an entire campaign, not just a single deliverable.
Beyond the creative, our team partnered closely with Landscape Management from concept through delivery. We coordinated with the client throughout the design process:
- Sourced production vendors
- Managed communication with the seed supplier
- Oversaw print production and approvals
- Ensured the finished packets were delivered in time for community events
Bringing a project like this to life takes more than good design. It takes thoughtful collaboration, careful project management and attention to every detail along the way.
A seed packet won’t expand Charlotte’s tree canopy on its own. But canopy health and ground-level habitat are part of the same ecosystem. Native plantings support pollinators, strengthen biodiversity and encourage resilient, water-wise landscapes that make a city greener from the ground up. More importantly, a packet someone plants in their own yard transforms a resident into an active participant, helping build the community support that larger environmental initiatives depend on.
The positive response at community events reinforced exactly that. What started as an idea to refresh Landscape Management’s giveaway items became a simple but meaningful way to educate residents and encourage them to play a role in Charlotte’s environmental future.
Projects like this remind us that effective community engagement isn’t always about creating something bigger. Sometimes it’s about creating something meaningful by giving people an easy way to become part of the solution.
